Holy Trinity

Proverbs 8:1-4, 22-31; Psalm 8; Romans 5:1-5; John 16:12-15

Holy Trinity Sunday comes to us, and the majestic triune task force is hard at work restoring the whole creation. Towards the end of his farewell discourse in the gospel of John, Jesus still has many things to say. Yet, the disciples may not be able to comprehend them all at that point (John 16:12). Nonetheless, the promised Holy Spirit of Truth, who speaks the same language as the Father and the Son, will guide the Christian faithful in everything we need to know (13-15).

Some Christians compare the Old Testament wisdom to the Holy Spirit promised by Jesus to help and guide us. Both God’s spirit (wind) and wisdom are present at the beginning of creation (Genesis 1:2 and Proverbs 8:22) alongside the Son (John 1:1-5, 14). If Wisdom and the Holy Spirit are the same person, then we can wonder how much the restoration of the divine joy among humanity (Proverbs 8:30-31) is encompassed in the guidance the Spirit of Truth will provide for us.

Nonetheless, the path to bliss does not always go through green pastures and still waters. Paul knows all about it. Through all kinds of afflictions, he instructs the church in Rome that the challenges they may face are not signs of God’s abandonment or condemnation. Instead, these are opportunities to use the strength that comes from the faith in Jesus Christ, which assures the believer of God’s peace, grace, hope, and love (Romans 5:1-3), all gifts of the Holy Spirit freely given to us!

The Psalmist sings:

“When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers,

the moon and the stars that you have established;

what are humans that you are mindful of them,

mortals that you care for them?

Yet you have made them a little lower than God

and crowned them with glory and honor (Psalm 8:3-5).”
