14th Sunday after Pentecost
Exodus 32:7-14; Psalm 51:1-10; 1 Timothy 1:12-17; Luke 15:1-10

The scriptures for this Sunday bring our attention to a God that changes God’s mind (Exodus). Well, that opens a lot of possibilities, doesn’t it? I think it is very good to have a God who listens to our arguments. Wrestling with God is part of the Hebrew tradition but something that Christians are not always comfortable with. What if I tell you that according to the Bible, God has had multiple second thoughts and changes of mind. I know that can be unsettling for some. However, at every moment God went in a different direction God was moved by absolute compassion for us. It is not good, actually. It is awesome that God listens when we unselfishly argue on the side of love, gentleness, forgiveness, justice, and mercy. However, there is one thing that seems to always be on God’s mind that is consistent and unchangeable from the beginning, God’s desire to fully reconcile with what is lost.
